Australian-owned since 20174.80/5 on Reviews.io

Yes. An Australian self managed super fund (SMSF) can trade Bitcoin and crypto. Digital Surge gives your fund an AUSTRAC-registered Australian exchange with the administration covered: a dedicated account in the fund's name, a BGL Simple Fund 360 data feed, tax software connections and the statements your accountant and auditor ask for.

The short answer

## Can a self managed super fund trade crypto in Australia?

Yes. A self managed super fund is a private superannuation fund you manage yourself, and it can be used to trade crypto in Australia where its trust deed and documented strategy allow it. Whether crypto suits your fund is a decision for you and a licensed SMSF adviser. Everything on this page is general information only, not a recommendation.

Built for funds

## An SMSF account your accountant can work with

Your fund gets its own verified account, and the people who look after it get the data they need at tax time and audit.

### An account in your fund's name

your SMSF account is registered to the fund and kept separate from personal trading. Every buy, sell and transfer is recorded in the fund's name.

### A BGL Simple Fund 360 data feed

your fund's administrator can pull trading data and balances straight into BGL's Simple Fund 360.

### Tax software connections

link Summ (formerly Crypto Tax Calculator), Syla, Koinly, CoinLedger or CoinTracking with a read-only API key or a CSV export.

### Statements for tax time and audit

download account statements for any financial year, your full transaction history, and end of financial year prices for 30 June valuations.

For your administrator

## The BGL Simple Fund 360 crypto data feed

Digital Surge has offered a cryptocurrency data feed for BGL's Simple Fund 360 since 2022. Once a fund is linked, buys, sells and swaps, income transactions like staking and airdrops, and AUD and crypto balances flow through daily, and historical transactions are included automatically.

To switch it on, ask our support team to enable the feed for your fund's account. We'll give you a Customer UID to enter in BGL, and the feed is free of charge. See [how the BGL Simple Fund 360 feed works](/smsf/bgl-simple-fund-360/) for the full walkthrough. Your accountant keeps their software; your fund's data just shows up in it.

Getting started

## How to buy crypto in an SMSF with Digital Surge

Buying crypto in an SMSF takes three steps on Digital Surge.

1. ### Open your SMSF trading account Sign up and verify on mobile or desktop, then register your fund as an SMSF account. You'll provide your fund's SMSF documentation, listed under What you need below.
2. ### Deposit funds instantly with PayID Deposit Australian dollars into your SMSF account instantly with PayID, available around the clock. PayID runs on the New Payments Platform, so deposits are typically credited in real time, any day of the week. Deposit only from your SMSF's own bank account: deposits from accounts in any other name are rejected.
3. ### Buy, sell and transfer crypto Once funded, your SMSF can buy, sell and transfer leading cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin. You can place a standard order, schedule recurring buys, or set a target price with advanced orders. See [how our order routing and trading works](/how-it-works/). Every trade is made in your fund's name and recorded for your records.

Requirements

## What you need to set up an SMSF crypto account

To open an SMSF crypto account you'll need your fund's legal documents and identity verification. SMSF verification checks the fund as well as you, so allow a little extra time before your first trade.

You'll typically need:

1 Your SMSF trust deed the full deed for the fund, showing all trustees and members. 2 The fund's ABN and registered address its Australian Business Number and the address the fund is registered at. 3 Photo ID for trustees a passport or driver licence for each individual trustee, or for the directors of a corporate trustee. 4 ASIC company extract only if your fund has a corporate trustee; available from the ASIC website if you don't have one.

## Superannuation crypto: what SMSF trustees should keep in mind

Trading crypto through superannuation carries fund-specific responsibilities. As a trustee you're generally expected to

- follow your fund's documented strategy and the sole-purpose test,
- keep the fund's assets separate from your personal assets,
- buy with the fund's own money, since funds generally can't acquire crypto from members or other related parties (Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act, section 66), and
- keep records of every transaction, including 30 June market values for the fund's annual audit.

Crypto is also highly volatile, with risks including market swings, security threats and scams. It's worth understanding [how we keep your crypto secure](/security/).

None of this is a recommendation. It's general information only. For anything specific to your fund, speak with a licensed financial adviser who specialises in SMSF rules. The ATO publishes [guidance on SMSF crypto assets](https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/super-for-individuals-and-families/self-managed-super-funds-smsf/smsf-newsroom/navigating-smsf-crypto-assets), and for tax treatment see our [Australian crypto tax guide](/insights/crypto-tax-guide-2025/).

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

Does my SMSF's trust deed need to allow crypto?

Generally, yes. Before your fund trades crypto, its trust deed and documented strategy should permit holding digital assets. If they don't, they may need to be updated first. This is general information only, not a recommendation; a licensed SMSF adviser can confirm what your fund's governing documents allow.

How long does it take to set up an SMSF crypto account?

Setting up an SMSF crypto account takes longer than a personal sign-up because your fund is a separate legal entity that must be verified. You'll submit your fund's documentation and complete SMSF verification; once all your documents are received, approvals are usually completed within 24 hours. After that, trading works the same as any Digital Surge account.

Can I transfer crypto into my SMSF account?

Crypto your fund already owns, for example on another exchange or in a wallet in the fund's name, can be transferred into your SMSF account. Personally held crypto is different: superannuation law generally prevents a fund acquiring assets from members or other related parties, and this includes crypto. Speak with a licensed SMSF adviser before moving anything.

Does my SMSF need its own crypto wallet?

Your fund's crypto must be held separately from personal assets, in the fund's name. A Digital Surge SMSF account is registered to your fund, which keeps that separation on the exchange. If your fund also uses its own wallet, that wallet should belong to the fund and be documented for your records and audit.

Can my accountant connect crypto tax software to my SMSF account?

Yes. The tax tools listed above connect with a read-only API key, so your accountant can see the fund's transaction history without any access to trade or withdraw. If a tool isn't listed, a CSV export of your full transaction history usually does the job. Our [tax reporting integrations guide](https://help.digitalsurge.com.au/en/articles/12604841-digital-surge-integrations-for-crypto-tax-reporting) walks through each tool.

What records will my SMSF's auditor ask for?

Every SMSF is audited annually, and for crypto the auditor typically wants evidence the account is held in the fund's name, records of every transaction, and 30 June market values in Australian dollars. The ATO accepts a 30 June closing value published by a crypto exchange. The statements above cover these; what your auditor requires is ultimately up to them.

Does Digital Surge give SMSF or personal advice?

No. Digital Surge provides general information only, not a recommendation, and our support team can't advise on SMSF trading or your fund's strategy. We're a crypto exchange, not a financial adviser. For guidance specific to your fund, speak with a licensed financial adviser who specialises in SMSF rules.
