Cosmos (ATOM) is the native coin of the Cosmos Hub, a proof-of-stake Layer-1 that finalises blocks through Tendermint consensus, with no proof-of-work mining anywhere in the design.
Cosmos is built as a set of independent, sovereign blockchains connected by the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC), which moves tokens and data between them using light-client proofs rather than a central bridge. That architecture is why Cosmos is widely called the internet of blockchains. The Cosmos Hub sits at the centre, keeping a multi-asset ledger and routing tokens between the chains linked to it. Its whitepaper was authored by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman in 2016, and the Hub's mainnet went live in March 2019.
