This Week in Crypto: Blockchain Australia Week 2024 Celebrates a Decade and Rebrands

Blockchain Australia Week 2024, held from June 11th to 14th, has been a vibrant event in Sydney, coinciding with the Vivid Sydney festival. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this annual gathering of blockchain enthusiasts, industry leaders, and innovators has brought together over 80 speakers to discuss the latest developments in blockchain technology and its impact on the digital economy. The event featured diverse sessions on digital assets, regulatory frameworks, AI integration, and real-world applications, highlighting blockchain’s growing influence and potential to reshape various industries.

The week kicked off with the announcement of Blockchain Australia’s rebranding to the Digital Economy Council of Australia (DECA), reflecting a broader focus on digital technologies such as AI, digital identity, and cybersecurity. This strategic move aims to attract a wider array of fintech firms and banks. Additionally, Amy-Rose Goodey was introduced as the new managing director, taking over from Simon Callaghan. Goodey’s leadership is expected to guide DECA through its expanded focus, positioning the organisation at the forefront of Australia’s digital innovation landscape.

The event featured a diverse line-up of sessions covering various blockchain and digital technology topics. Key discussions included the future of digital assets, regulatory frameworks, and AI integration with blockchain. Dr. Andrew Charlton MP spoke on blockchain’s potential to transform Australia’s digital economy. Helen McHugh from ACS led the Blockchain Builders Panel, focusing on industry innovations. Caroline Page of Virtually Human highlighted significant advancements in AI and Web3. Panels on custody solutions, tokenisation, and digital currency exchanges highlighted the evolving landscape of these technologies and their real-world applications. Additionally, the event emphasised networking and collaboration through various presentations and interactive sessions, fostering community connections and knowledge sharing.

Next year, Blockchain Week will evolve into The Digital Economy Conference, scheduled for June 16–18, 2025, on the Gold Coast. This event will delve into the crucial role of distributed ledger technology (DLT), blockchain, and digital assets in Australia’s digital transformation, continuing to drive discussions and innovations in the digital economy.
