What is NEO?

NEO is an open-source blockchain platform first launched in 2014 as AntShares by the Chinese developers Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang, then renamed NEO in 2017. It was built to turn real-world assets into digital ones and to run smart contracts, with the aim of supporting what its founders describe as a smart economy. It is sometimes called China's Ethereum.

The network confirms transactions using a delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance system, known as dBFT, which keeps confirmations quick and energy use modest. Developers can build on NEO in familiar languages such as C#, Python and Java, and the platform pairs decentralised applications with a digital-identity layer aimed at meeting local compliance rules.

NEO runs a two-token model. The NEO token itself represents a stake in the network and carries governance rights, while a second token, GAS, pays for transaction and smart-contract costs. Simply holding NEO generates GAS over time, which holders can claim and spend inside the ecosystem.

Development has continued through the NEO N3 upgrade, and the project keeps a notable presence across Asian markets. On Digital Surge you can buy and hold NEO in AUD, with the live price shown before you confirm.

FAQ

Buying NEO: FAQs

Can I buy a small amount of NEO?

Yes. A NEO order on Digital Surge can be a fraction of a token, so a first purchase can stay small. Most people simply type a dollar figure in AUD and let the platform work out the NEO, rather than counting in whole coins.

How quickly can I buy NEO?

Usually within minutes. The slower steps happen only once: verifying your identity and making a first deposit, which PayID trims to under a minute for most people. After that, a NEO order confirms in moments and settles at the live AUD price.

Can I sell or swap NEO on Digital Surge?

Yes. Your NEO can be sold for Australian dollars whenever you choose, or swapped for a different coin in a single step inside the Digital Surge app. The AUD from a sale lands in your balance, ready to send on to your linked bank account.

What is the difference between NEO and GAS?

NEO is the governance token that represents a stake in the network, while GAS is the utility token that pays for transaction and smart-contract costs. Holding NEO generates GAS over time, which you can claim and spend within the ecosystem. Digital Surge lists the NEO token in AUD.

What can developers build on NEO?

NEO is an open-source smart-contract platform for decentralised applications, digital certificates and digitised assets. It supports several programming languages, including C#, Python and Java, and adds a digital-identity layer, which lets developers build with local compliance in mind.

How do I check the live NEO price?

The live NEO price sits in the tracker at the top of this page, quoted in Australian dollars and refreshed as the market moves. The converter just beneath it prices any amount either way, in AUD or NEO, on the same rate you will see at checkout.
